Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar and priest who was arrested by the Nazis and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1941. He is particularly famous for an act of immense self-sacrifice. When a fellow prisoner was selected to be executed in reprisal for an escape attempt, Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take the man's place, ultimately dying in his stead. His actions at Auschwitz and his dedication to the Catholic faith led to his canonization as a saint in 1982.

  • Martyrs: St. Maximilian Kolbe's willingness to lay down his life for another prisoner at Auschwitz led to his martyrdom, and he is venerated as a patron saint of martyrs.
