is someone you'd rather not meet on a deserted highway late at night. But
when it comes to knowing the authentic roots of ghost stories--and
which ones remain unexplained to this day--you don't stand a ghost
of a chance. Don't get spirited away yet! The Complete Idiot's Guide to
Ghosts and Hauntings is an eerie investigation into the firsthand
accounts, legends, literature, and dramatic works surrounding the world
of ghosts.

From headless phantoms
and screaming specters to invisible poltergeists and disembodied voices,
ghosts occupy our homes, infest cemeteries and graveyards, lurk in nearby
caves and forests, and even wander city streets. However, despite
the wealth of sightings, aspiring ghost hunters have few resources.
Now, for the first time, here is a fully functioning field guide for those
courageous investigators who wish to observe and interact with supernatural
beings and the spirit world. Drawn from all available evidence, including
recent research and sightings, modern urban legends, and Native American
mythology and North American folklore, this book describes in detail over
100 haunted sites and their resident specters.

Ghosts
: True Encounters With the World Beyond
Ghosts: True Encounters
with the World Beyond is a gigantic volume, documenting almost 200 cases
of haunted houses, ships, castles, and just about any place imaginable!
The cases are far more complex than just your average white-sheeted ghoul
in the attic. Holzer examines the differences between "real ghosts," who
reveal themselves to living people, and psychic impressions, which occur
to many witnesses, always at the same time and place. There is also solid
advice for interpreting paranormal signals--and even photographs of ghostly
apparitions.

wonder of the possibilities of other realms of existance. Brad has put

True
Hauntings : Spirits With a Purpose
True Hauntings is
a well organized, analytical attempt to understand the nature of ghosts,
and the "whys" behind the peculiar actions of these entities. Going beyond
the usual "real ghost stories" type book, Hazel Denning's cases are told
from the ghosts' points of view, and give a fresh perspective on this ancient
phenomenon.
Poltergeist
: A Study in Destructive...
Wilson, a prolific
author of books on philosophy and the occult, makes a case by case examination
of a variety of poltergeist occurrences in an attempt to synthesize a viable
explanation for the poltergeist phenomenon. After looking at evidence from
cases varied by time and location he comes to the conclusion that poltergeists
are spirit energies rather than a form of psychokinesis. His ideas are
controversial, but well argued and documented.
The
Terror That Comes in the Night : An Experience-Centered Study of Supernatural
Assault Traditions
David Hufford's academic
work, subtitled An Experience Centered Study of Supernatural Assault Traditions,
deals with the so-called 'Old Hag' experience, a psychologically disturbing
event in which a victim claims to have encountered some form of malign
entity whilst dreaming (or awake). Sufferers report feeling suffocated,
held down by some 'force', paralyzed-and extremely afraid. It is an experience
which is surprisingly common, with Hufford estimating that approximately
15% of people undergo it at some point in their lives. Various cultures
have their own name for the phenomenon, and have constructed their own
mythology around it; the supernatural tenor of many Old Hag stories is
unavoidable. Hufford, as a folklorist, is well-placed to investigate this
puzzling occurrence.

Techiniques are offered
to test out the ideas presented in the book. Some of the ideas are common
sense, some are new to me. There are some maxim's that jump out of the
page, and I found something applicable to me right as I read them. Jumping
around the chapters suited me best. I found it interesting with alot of
information for a lot of different situations.
